The terms 'hermit' and 'anchorite' were synonymous in the early ages of monasticism. It was only in the Middle Ages that the term 'anchorite' came to mean one who was in 'deeper reclusion'. In 1996, the Code commision determined that the term 'hermit and anchorite' were to be considered synonymous in law.
